The fifth collection of Evolve, "Breaking Down The Barriers" is Cincinnati's magick union of conscious hiphop, experimental punk, and psychedelic electronica. Fully inspired by both spiritual and socio-political aspects of the cut-up process, this album is bathed in warm and propagandic tape collage, over thick electronic drums crafted from various hardware, featuring several collaborative beats by Mavis Concave (Praey, Realicide, Thumper). Lyrical performances by the project's founder Colin Murray, as well as Jim Swill (Realicide) and Freak-One (Chemical Committee), run consistent in every way to their electronically collaged platform. Key topics include resisting the slavery of corporate capitalism, both physically literal and that of the mind and soul, dietary consciousness and an emphasis of life as sacred, both individually in animals and our Earth as one collective being, countering social stereotypes of gender, class systems, and the means of sustaining one's self with or without consumerist vices... Art direction by Robert Inhuman includes video stills and imagery from events by Bunk News, the crew that revived an excitement for new DIY arts in Cincinnati throughout 2009 while this music was being created. Mastered by Mavis Concave. "Breaking Down The Barriers" is in many ways the Realicide label's follow-up to "Resisting The Viral Self", the Realicide album released earlier the same year. Although the aesthetics of Evolve differ greatly from the label's tendencies towards abrasive hardcore, the Evolve project was formed at the same time as Realicide in 2002, and has progressed parallel over the years with similar social aims. "Breaking Down The Barriers" is the first Evolve album published on vinyl LP, and its CD version contains dozens of additional songs and cut-up selections. Both formats are accompanied by an extensive zine featuring all lyrics and dialogue clips transcribed, as well as supplementary essays and artwork by various collaborators. This record is highly recommended to anyone who appreciates the urgent themes found in most other Realicide Youth Records and is interested in experiencing comparable ideas through a different array of musical styles. Beyond aesthetic boundaries; beyond the numbing masks and psychick chains any of us may wear; moving forward together in favor of an energy healing One Earth and all its humble cells which we all ultimately are; surely this Earth is rather the One to heal us all. 23 October 2009, for Realicide Youth Records.

Another spot on the map of the Weevil Neighbourhood: after our latest excursion into the intensely droney yet fragile and unstable musique concrete of Repetition/Distract's 'Old Weevil Neighbourhood' (Cat.No: PICNIC), we continue mapping the terrain with our eyes closed and our ears wide open. BLINDFOLD (Cat.No) comes as a mid-tempo two-tracker from an artist who wants to stay anonymous. A-side 'All Those Colours...' is a Dubtechno inspired piece that contrasts its laid-back soundscapes with a broken beat and hectic highhats that converge with large rooms of reverberation. '...We Cannot See', the counterpart on side B, contrasts static drumwork with shuffling breaks and early hardcore sounds with noisey drones that cold-warmly cover more or less the whole piece. Label info: Over the course of nearly a decade of releases, Szare have have been a mainstay of UK dance music, cementing their reputation through a string of essential releases for labels like Horizontal Ground, Idle Hands, Field, Project 13 and Different Circles. We’re extremely proud to add another name to that list, with this diverse selection of tracks that comprise both new ideas and forgotten loops, re-visited and re-tooled. The first track, Miner, is named after a street in Downtown Stockton, CA. Whilst Miner isn’t directly about the Central Valley of California, the juxtaposed rhythmic and thematic iterations that outline its structure reflect the uncanny incongruence of the environment that birthed it. From the opening bar, the rhythms are pounding, frenetic, and totally unhinged… We won’t give away the payoff though; listen to the tune. Cut with Glass - written after a recycling mishap - perfectly encapsulates a vintage side of the Szare sound - minimal, free from ornamentation, and with an approach to uk sound system culture that exhibits a more westward-gazing sound palette than initially meets the eye. Drop Shadow rounds off the package; as much an exploration of concrète as it is bass music, the drop to 100bpm facilitates one of the most controlled and perfectly executed arrangements we’ve ever heard out of Szare. Dark atmospheric industrial breaks with techno and speedcore elements. After perusing the silt underground of northern europe, Berlin’s Jon Baruc has returned for their first solo release in three years as Death Qualia. You may remember our shapeshifting friend from 2014’s Surface Tension LP by DEFCE – of which Baruc is 1/2. The Fanged Contradiction EP continues as a side plot to our rising comprehension of the anti-hero’s journey; this lore taking place in a timeless village threatened and paralysed by an all-terrain beast. Musically, this record pays homage to Baruc and Ohm Resistance’s shared origins of New York as a sort of year 3030 take on urban east coast space-gangster beats. The brimming 6-track vinyl ranges from vivid scenic ambient to Death Qualia’s personal brand of ultra-techno. SUBMERGED is the King of Underground Drum n Bass DJs, having pioneered the scene for the hard sound from Astana to São Paulo to Kiev to Brooklyn. He is the founder of Galactic Enterprise that is Ohm Resistance. DISTORTION is a collaborative single with some of the 100% certified dopest Kool Keith verses. He is tuned into his co-authors, dropping lines about “Power sources, Mediterranean bosses”, going “52 states, European, Worldwide”, discussing “more power to explore”, and knowing how to “stick my hand out the speaker and reach y’all”. A massive energy lioff occurs as Keith joins his multiverse with that of the Ohm Resistance artists. Mick Harris’ instantly recognizable bludgeoning beat carries the weight, as he trades off bass blast duties with the organic overdriven bassline of Submerged.
