Blekingegade is a quiet Copenhagen street. It is also where, in May 1989, the police discovered an apartment that had served Denmark’s most notorious twentieth-century bank robbers as a hideaway for years. The Blekingegade Group members belonged to a communist organization and lived modest lives in the Danish capital. Over a period of almost two decades, they sent millions of dollars acquired in spectacular heists to Third World liberation movements, in particular the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In May 1991, seven of them were convicted and went to prison.

Turning Money into Rebellion: The Unlikely Story of Denmark’s Revolutionary Bank Robbers is the first-ever account of the story in English, covering a fascinating journey from anti-war demonstrations in the late 1960s via travels to Middle Eastern capitals and African refugee camps to the group’s fateful last robbery that earned them a record haul and left a police officer dead.
The book includes historical documents, illustrations, and an exclusive interview with Torkil Lauesen and Jan Weimann, two of the group’s longest-standing members. Sein Leben, das wie ein Abenteuerroman klingt, ist ein Spiegel der revolutionären Bewegungen Europas in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Lucio Urtubia wird 1931 in einem kleinen Dorf in Navarra geboren und wächst unter ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf. Als er zum Militär eingezogen wird, desertiert er wenig später nach Frankreich, wo er fortan als Maurer arbeitet. Er bekommt Kontakt zu anarchistischen Gruppen und lernt seinen politischen Ziehvater kennen: den legendären Sabaté, der von Frankreich aus den bewaffneten Widerstand gegen die Franco-Diktatur organisiert. Fälschen von Dokumenten, Verstecken von Untergrundkämpfern und illegale Geldbeschaffungsaktionen spielen fortan in seinem Leben eine erhebliche Rolle. Zahlreiche Widerstandsorganisationen, die in Frankreich eine Operationsbasis haben oder einen Rückzugsraum suchen, profitieren von seinen Fertigkeiten: Black Panthers, Tupamaros, europäische Guerillas. Jedem Akt der Revolte, der auf eine gerechtere Gesellschaftsordnung zielt, gilt Lucios Solidarität. 1962 schlägt er dem damaligen Leiter der Nationalbank Kubas, Che Guevara, vor, den Weltmarkt mit gefälschten Dollarnoten zu überschwemmen, um die US-amerikanische Wirtschaft zu destabilisieren. Die Liste seiner Aktivitäten ist damit nicht erschöpft. Doch Lucio ist auch ein Meister der Konspiration, dem in seinem nicht gerade gesetzestreuen Leben das Kunststück gelingt, nur ein paar Monate im Gefängnis zu verbringen. Erst mit weit über 70 Jahren bricht er das Schweigen. Ein Buch über ihn erscheint, ein Film wird gedreht. Nun hat Lucio Urtubia seine Autobiografie vorgelegt.
